Belonging - End of Week 3

SMALL GROUP STUDY

INTRODUCTION
The following is a guide to help facilitate discussion between you and the person you’re studying with or with your Connect Group. Feel free to add, subtract, or change questions to fit the conversation, and pray for the Spirit to lead in all things.

OPEN QUESTIONS
What is one of your favorite things about the Christmas season?  What’s one of your least favorite things?

HEAD
  1. Read John 5:1-15 together and share any wisdom, insights, or thoughts that come to you from the reading.
  2. Can you imagine being sick for 38 years, and waiting day in and day out for someone to get you to the water, to help?  What must that journey have been like for the paralyzed man?
  3. Why do you think Jesus’ first question was, “Would you like to get well?”
  4. Do you think the man got used to sitting by the pool, watching others go by, receiving sympathy, or simply being overlooked?
  5. Why did the Pharisees overlook the miracle?  What keeps us from seeing God’s miracles and activities in our world today?
  6. Who told the man to stop sinning?  Why?  Are we to follow Jesus’ example in this and tell people to stop sinning?  Explain.

HEART
  1. Knowing that this man had come day after day, year after year, to this pool to get well, but hadn’t quite made it, what thoughts would be going through your head about him? 
  2. Why would this miracle be in the stories of belonging?  How did the man expeirence belonging through this miracle?
  3. What lesson about belonging is there for the Pharisees in this story?
  4. In what ways has Jesus brought healing into your life?  In what ways are you telling Jesus about the good things He has done for you?

HANDS
If you were able to spend 10 minutes with Jesus today, sitting at his feet, looking into his eyes, what would you ask Him to do for you?  What would you ask Him to do for someone else in your circle of influence?  Spend some time praying over these things, and if you’re in a good place to do so, let the person you’re praying for now that you spent time in prayer for them today.
